Feature: Boss Buster Guide for Metal Gear Solid 4

Vanquish all seven bosses in Guns of the Patriots by following these simple steps. SPOILER ALERT!

The bosses of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots are tough to beat, even for the most accomplished gamer. As if the roster of freaks in all the previous games wasn't ridiculous enough, you now have to deal with crazy mechanized babe machines, a souped-up Metal Gear Ray, and an immortal vampiric freakshow. GamePro's going to give you some valuable intel on taking down the big baddies in MGS4, just in case you can't sneak your way out of a "Mission Failed" scenario.

Boss I: Laughing Octopus / Laughing Beauty

Weaknesses/Tactics:

Laughing Octopus isn't a pushover, despite being the first boss. She frequently uses her tentacles to cut corners around the lab, envelope herself in concealing ink clouds, and block gunfire. Even worse, Octopus tries to steal Old Snake's camouflage tricks by blending in with textures and objects in the background, as well as mimicking other characters like Naomi. Luckily, when she's blending with the environment, she'll typically stay put until you find her. This is a good time to recover health and get some ammo, since she will be stalking you during the rest of the boss battle.

We recommend shotguns for the easy kill, although you can use the Mosin Nagant for a non-lethal battle. Stay a good distance from Octopus to avoid her tentacles, and when she balls up, get to high ground or simply move to another room. After you damage her enough, she'll drop the armor and turn into Laughing Beauty. Just like before, keep a comfortable distance and shoot the hell out of her. She will try to grab you if you get too close, but you can easily shake her off. Also, watch your aim--she will dodge some of your shots with a weird sideways moonwalk. After a while, you'll be able to take her down... unless you let time run out. That leads into something completely different.

Boss II: Raging Raven / Raging Beauty

Weaknesses/Tactics:

Shooting down Raging Raven depends heavily on how you use the environment. There's plenty of cover to shield you from her missiles while inside, although you'll sometimes be forced to take the fight to the roof. When that happens, just make sure you don't get your ass blown off the edge, which will definitely kill you.

Raven comes with an army of flying minions that will scout your position to her, so watch out for surprise attacks. It's easier to wait inside for her, since she will always hover in midair after screaming and rushing you. Take a quick moment to pop off a few shots, then roll, dodge, and hide before she can return fire. Any gun you have that uses bullets is pretty much useless in a lethal fight, so use something that's got more explosive qualities. You'll also need to make use or your cardboard box and drum can when Raven. starts tossing stun grenades. She'll announce to anyone in earshot that she needs to take breather, which is your cue to track her down and pepper her with gunfire.

After taking enough damage, Raven will drop her wings and lazily stalk you around the building. Once again, watch your aim since Raging Beauty will also do that sidestep-slash-moonwalk shuffle to dodge gunfire. Put enough rounds into her, and you'll close the book on another boss fight.

Boss III: Crying Wolf / Crying Beauty

Weaknesses/Tactics:

If you walk into this fight without night vision equipped on your Solid Eye, you will NEVER beat Crying Wolf. Long-range combat is key to winning, and the night vision view makes targeting much easier in this blizzard. You'll also make it easier to track down the FROG soldiers, and they won't be able to do much to you if you're not right next to them. Adding more trouble to this boss fight, Wolf will try to sniff out your position, and blow you to pieces with her rail gun. Stay downwind, and you'll be able to hide from her with ease. But once the camera changes view and Wolf spots you, run and hide for all you're worth.

Picking your shots wisely is important, since you'll only be able to snipe her when she steps out of her armor. Of course, you could just damage her with missile fire, but that's only worth it if you're determined to get a lethal kill. Aside from her own missile equipment, Crying Wolf will sometimes try to run you down and tackle you if sees you. If she pins you down, you'll take a LOT of damage, so keep moving if she's too close for comfort. Also, watch the countdown meter after dispatching the FROGS -- once it hits zero, they'll spam all over the battlefield and make the fight longer than it should be.

After enough punishment, Wolf will turn into Crying Beauty, effectively making her easy pickings. Like her sister bosses, she uses moves from the same dance instructor. Shoot her in the face, put her in her place, and move on at your own pace.
