Feature: GamePro Presents Boot Camp!
There has been a lot of discussion going on in the press lately about the beneficial (or detrimental, depending on your viewpoint) effect that video games can have on real world behavior. For instance, part-time lawyer and full-time crazy person Jack Thompson has famously posited that violent video games can train people to be better killers, and studies have shown that video games can help improve hand-eye coordination and reaction times.
So GamePro decided to put this theory to the test with a series of experiential experiments to see if video games can truly "train" us to be better at real world activities. In the first installment of Boot Camp, we'll be using Nintendo's Wii Sports to see if it can help improve our bowling games. Recently, five editors and staff members hit a local bowling alley to get a baseline indicator of their bowling abilities. Here are the results in descending order.
Despite a stunning lack of physical coordination, SonOfTheShiningPath came in first, checking in with a respectable score of 123.
Long- Haired Offender overcame his inability to tell his right hand from his left to come in second with 72.
Birthday boy DaveMayCry found time between opening up presents and cutting his birthday cake (with pink frosting) to bowl a 70.
As the lone female representative, RebelPrincess demonstrated the power of estrogen and proved that she could hang with the boys by throwing up a score of 69.
Ahoy_and_Avast, on the other hand, embarrassed himself and his entire family by only managing a score of 52. He was subsequently laughed out of the bowling alley by the Girl Scout troop that was bowling one lane over.
For the rest of the week, the five participants will be hitting the virtual lanes in Wii Sports to fine tune their games. They'll also be keeping training journals on their personal blogs, which you can access via the links above. On Friday, the GamePros will be returning to the bowling alley to see if their video game training has paid off.
What effect will a week's worth of Wii Bowling have on these amateur bowlers? Will the time spent on the virtual lanes translate over to the real world or will they have nothing to show for their efforts other than sore wrists? Stay tuned to find out, and be sure to stop by the participants' blogs to read about their experiences in the week long bowling boot camp with Wii Sports!
Can a week of Wii Bowling turn five GamePros into pin destroying bowling machines?
