Feature: GamePro BioShock Roundtable (Page 4 of 4)

Dave May Cry, Games.Net editor

"Lightning bolt!"

How many hours of Bioshock have you played so far?

Only about two so far... I just defeated the crazy doctor. I'd be all about the 'Shock, but I have to play another of the year's notable FPS titles for a review. I can't say much, but playing this other game knowing BioShock is on my shelf is tantamount to torture.

What has been your initial impression of the game?

After playing the demo, I was reminded of another moody first person Xbox 360 title -- Condemned. The feeling of zapping a psychopath before cracking him over the skull with a wrench was instantly familiar. Now that I've got a little bit more time with the game, I'd say it has definitely come into its own and surpassed Condemned. No small feat, as it's one of my favorite Xbox 360 titles.

Name the one thing that stands out to you the most about the game's design.

The first time the underwater city was revealed to me was among the most breathtaking sights I've even seen in a videogame. I knew at that point in the demo -- which was before any combat, mind you -- that I had to own the game.

What three adjectives would you use to describe the game to a fellow gamer?

Moody, artistic, and beautiful.

What is your favorite weapon so far? Have you upgraded it in any way?

I love the machine gun, even though its tough to keep steady. No upgrades yet.

Which plasmid power have you relied on the most?

Electro Bolt. Nothing like zapping a pool full of stupid Splicers. Also, it's the only time I can scream "lightning bolt" and not feel like a total dork.

How have you been defeating the Big Daddies? Name your favorite strategy(s).

I haven't run across one yet (sob), but I'm pretty sure I'll just let them go about their business. I'm having enough trouble with Splicers thankyouverymuch.

You can choose to Harvest a Little Sister (for maximum Adam, which kills her) or Rescue them (for less Adam). Which have you been doing, and why?

If Star Wars: KoToR is any indication, I can't play a videogame and take the immoral path -- it just doesn't feel right. Unless I absolutely need to kill her to progress in the game, I'll likely let her live. But, as I've noted above, the opportunity hasn't arisen yet.

If you had to vote right now (yes, we know the year isn't over), would you award BioShock as Game of the Year? Why or why not?

I can't really say with my limited experience, but I haven't been this enthralled with a game at this early point for quite some time.

"Funktastic."

How many hours of Bioshock have you played so far?

Around 6.

What has been your initial impression of the game?

Spectacular.

Name the one thing that stands out to you the most about the game's design.

The artistic vision and execution. I like the Art Deco theme, and as I play it seems the Splicers are really just aggro mobs. I think the water effects, the voice, and behavior of the Little Sisters are second to none.

What three adjectives would you use to describe the game to a fellow gamer?

Creepy, funktastic, and win.

What is your favorite weapon so far? Have you upgraded it in any way?

My favorite weapon is the Shotgun with Electric Buck ammo.

Which plasmid power have you relied on the most?

Telekinesis.

How have you been defeating the Big Daddies? Name your favorite strategy(s).

I thought I had to kill them in one life so I have been having a hard time getting it done. I have killed two so far and my favorite strategy is to lure the other Splicers near the Big Daddy and have them shoot it. The Big Daddy will attack the Splicers, and while it is attacking, hit it with Electro Bolt/Electric Buck so the Splicers can get free shots in. Once it is softened up, alternate between Electro Bolt and toss things at it with Telekinesis until it's dead.

You can choose to Harvest a Little Sister (for maximum Adam, which kills her) or Rescue them (for less Adam). Which have you been doing, and why?

I have been rescuing them because I knew I would get something good for doing it -- and I have!

If you had to vote right now (yes, we know the year isn't over), would you award BioShock as Game of the Year? Why or why not?

It is the best game I have played so far this year. I have yet to call it Game of the Year because I haven't finished it yet.
