Smash through Paradise in the one of the most impressive racing experiences ever. We unload every last details.
Burnout fans should get quite a treat next month when Burnout Paradise lands on Xbox 360 and PS3. In short, it's a complete re-envisioning of the series; a bold attempt to bring the Burnout series into the "new" generation. Sure, Burnout Revenge was the first Xbox 360 title for the series, but Paradise is the real deal.
Gone are the clutter-y menus, confined races and wonky online modes from Burnout's past. It has all been place replaced with a huge open city where everything happens on the fly.
The city is one giant playground. It's a pretty big one, too, but not the massive San Andreas type that is so big it's confusing. You can go anywhere on the map and there are shortcuts and jumps everywhere. It's easiest to think of Paradise City as two different types of terrain: a downtown metropolis with loads of intersecting streets and overpasses, as well as a mountainous area where it's a bit more linear. Paradise City has secrets like breakable billboards and shortcuts sprinkled throughout, and one could spend hours just exploring its intricacies.
All events are triggered at traffic lights throughout the city. If you want to start a race, Road Rage event or Burning Route, simply stop at a signal to activate it. There's no loading and you're off. New to the series are Stunt Runs and Marked Man events, the former challenging you to get x number of points with insane stunts and the latter making you the takedown target of a few aggressive opponents.
Races are as crazy and action-packed as always, though the biggest change is how you get to the finish line. Races are completely open-ended and there's no "track," per se. So you can basically make your own route. And that means you have to get to know the city. There's a helpful map and a cool turn signal indicator that guides you in the right direction, but if all else fails, you can follow the pack.
Road Rage events haven't changed much, but now there's more strategy in the type of car you choose and where you race in the city. For me, it was easier to rack up multiple takedowns in the mountain areas because the roads are more linear.
Each car in the game has its own Burning Route, which unlocks an upgraded ride. They are all located on the map.
Stunt Runs are loads of fun if you perform them right. The key is to find shorcuts and jumps that are linked together in long stretches. There are plenty in Paradise City and you simply have to find them. Getting stunt multipliers is the best way to get massive combos. Doing things like smashing billboards and performing barrel rolls does the trick nicely.
Find an auto repair shop to fix your ride on the fly.
