Oh, the Places You'll Go - Stages

Almost as exciting as the roster of featured scrappers are the colorful and inventive backgrounds upon which they'll fight. The basic Battlefield (consisting primarily of one large tree- and ruin-covered platform) proves the simplest example, and even this stage sports dazzling day/night transitions.

Others are themed around familiar references from other games, such as the Metal Gear series' Shadow Moses Island's helipad and Pokemon Stadium 2 (whose terrain shifts between ice, flying, electric and ground types). StarFox fans will enjoy trading blows on a Lylat spaceship as much as Donkey Kong Jungle Beat buffs will dig Jungle Falls, with a zany WarioWare level offered in addition to one inspired by PictoChat's hand-drawn sketches too.

All told, roughly 17 stages have thus far been announced, whetting anticipation for even more great virtual playgrounds to come. Among other destinations you can look forward to: The Bridge of Eldin, Delfino Plaza, Yoshi's Island, Smashville, Skyworld, Castle Siege, Battleship Halberd, New Pork City, The Summit and Norfair.

The entire menu of cool places to play is, as you might imagine, inspired by current and classic Nintendo gems. Keeping this in mind, it's inevitable that onlookers will have just as much fun watching you duke it out at favorite hotspots as you do filling their streets and lava pits with cartoon-ish carnage.
